Syracuse Tops Cornell in the Season Opener
Syracuse defeated Cornell 77-45 in the season opener tonight in the Carrier Dome. The game featured a father versus son battle as Syracuse Coach Jim Boeheim coached against his oldest son Jimmy in his first collegiate game.
Cornell raced out to an early 5-4 lead as Jimmy Boeheim looked right at home scoring the Big Red’s first five points. A 12-1 Orange run put the Orange ahead for good. Sophomore shooting guard Tyus Battle led the Orange with 18 points and 4 rebounds and USF transfer Geno Thorpe added 12 points and 3 steals in his (official) Syracuse debut.
The Big Red were led by Matt Morgan who scored 14 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Jimmy Boeheim chipped in with 11 points and secured a team-high 5 rebounds.
Oshae Brissett turned in a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in the first game of his career. Freshman Marek Dolezaj and Bourama Sidibe came off the bench and contributed right away. Dolezaj scored 8 points and corralled 6 rebounds, while Sidibe stuffed the stat sheet with 7 points, 6 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 steals. Junior point guard Frank Howard scored 9 points and dished out 4 assists on only 1 turnover and Paschal Chukwu blocked 3 shots as well.
Everyone contributed as the Orange pulled away. The Orange will need to continue to develop at every position moving forward.
Syracuse returns to action Tuesday, November 14 as they host the Iona Gaels at 7pm in the Carrier Dome.
