Syracuse Tops Texas Southern
Syracuse defeated Texas Southern 80-67 Saturday night in the Carrier Dome. With Tyus Battle in foul trouble, USF transfer Geno Thorpe scored all of his 13 points in the first half to propel the Orange to a 38-30 halftime lead. The Orange used a 15-0 run out of the break to pull away from the Tigers.
Offensively, this was the best Syracuse has looked as a team in their first three games of the season; the Orange got contributions throughout the rotation tonight and shot 45.6% from the field. Tyus Battle led all scorers with 21 points. He also added 3 steals on defense. Bourama Sidibe scored 11 points off the bench and added 3 rebounds. Oshae Brissett finished with 7 points and 10 rebounds, while Paschal Chucku contributed 6 points and 4 rebounds.
Frank Howard led the offense scoring 12 points and dishing out 8 assists. Howard did leave with 5 minutes left in the game to be stretched out by the training staff. It looked to just be cramps and he should be good to go for the next game on Monday.
After Saturday’s game, I am most excited to watch the development of Marek Dolezaj. The freshman stuffed the stat sheet with 9 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 blocks. Dolezaj worked like a second point guard and picked apart the Tigers defense dishing out high-low passes all night to the centers. He works hard and has a high basketball IQ. Dolezaj will be a treat to watch once he gets stronger and more comfortable scoring inside.
Next up for the Orange is a date with the Oakland Golden Grizzlies on Monday, November 20. Tip time in the Carrier Dome is set for 7pm.
