Syracuse Surges Past Oakland
Syracuse defeated Oakland 74-50 in the Carrier Dome on Monday night. After falling behind 9-6 early, the Orange used a 12-0 run to put themselves ahead for good.
The Orange were stout defensively throughout the game, holding Oakland to just 50 points on 30.5% shooting. Syracuse recorded 15 blocked shots and 12 steals on their way to the win. Defensively, the Orange were led by Paschal Chukwu who picked up his first career double-double. Chukwu finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds and facilitated the block party, as he swatted away 8 of the Golden Grizzlies shots. Chukwu was the first Syracuse player to block 8 shots since Fab Melo (RIP) recorded 10 blocks against Seton Hall in 2011.
Offensively, Syracuse was led by sophomore guard Tyus Battle who scored 25 points. Frank Howard continued to improve his offensive play as he tallied a career-high 18 points and distributed 6 assists. Oshae Brissett continued to play well as the freshman forward added 9 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 steals. Marek Dolezaj was active throughout racking up 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 blocks, and 2 steals.
Syracuse will take on the Toledo Rockets on Wednesday, November 22. Tip time in the Carrier Dome is set for 7pm. Syracuse will need to come out and play hard against an undefeated Toledo team if they want to avoid a trap game. It will be their last chance to tune up before their non-conference slates gets tougher. Following the Toledo game, the Orange will host Maryland, and play neutral site games against Kansas and Connecticut.
